JLA-Avengers artist George Perez, long-time X-Men inker Terry
Austin, Strangers in Paradise creator Terry Moore, a slew of Star
Wars guests, and many cast members celebrating the 25th
anniversary of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead were just a few among the
many guests of the 10th annual Pittsburgh Comicon, which was held
last weekend, April 25-27 at the Expo Mart in Monroeville.
The venue,
located just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was not-too-coincidentally
located just across a parking lot from Monroeville Mall, where Dawn of the
Dead was filmed in 1978.
“We're super happy the way everything
turned out. We're ecstatic,” said show promoter Michael George.
“This was his first time at the show, but Adam Hughes already e-mailed us
and let us know he wants to come back next year. George Perez will be back, and
so will Terry Moore. We're already hard at work on next year's
show.”
George said that the charity auctions at the show had raised
more than $27,000 for Make-a-Wish and $4,000 for the Comic Book Legal Defense
Fund, not including their booth sales.
Cover artist Tim Bradstreet,
Liberty Meadows creator Frank Cho, Kabuki creator David Mack,
Golden Age and Silver Age legend George Tuska, Green Lantern creator Mart
Nodell, Buzzboy creator John Gallagher, IDW Publishing' Beau Smith and
Frank Cammuso, creator of Max Hamm, Fairy Tale Detective, were also among
the guests.
Writer-artist Mark Wheatley premiered his upcoming Image
series Frankenstein Mobster in ashcan format and Astounding Space
Thrills creator Steve Conley passed out another of his amazing free
issues.
Shi creator Billy Tucci showed his award-winning short
film, some trouble of a SeRRious nature, to a packed room and answered
questions afterward.
“As usually, the Pittsburgh Comicon was a
wonderful event. Michael and Rene George always put on a great show,”
Tucci said.
“The CBLDF quick sketch was very well attended,”
said artist Gene Gonzales, creator of Tales of the Cherokee, “and
it was a lot of fun.”
