We always try to stay on top of the market and these items we have to share
with the collecting community. Recently, Heritage Comic Auctions sold a 1908
Original Comic Strip by Winsor McCay from Dream of the Rarebit Fiend.
This early piece of comic history sold for $13,225 and featured a baseball game
in which the ball crashed through some of the world's greatest landmarks,
including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Sphinx in Egypt and the Alps in Switzerland.
We believe that this is a record price for Winsor McCay art from Dream of the
Rarebit Fiend. If anyone knows of another example, please contact us.
Another amazing sale of Winsor McCay original art also took place
recently when All Star Auctions sold a 1906 Little Nemo in Slumberland
for $41,110.88. The art was dated 12/30/06 and features Nemo, the princess, and
old father time welcoming in 1907.
Winsor McCay was born in 1869 and
lived until 1934. During his life, McCay was an early comic art and animation
pioneer. His works include Little Sammy Sneeze, Little Nemo in
Slumberland, and Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend. He is also responsible
for bring to life the first animated cartoon in 1914 called Gertie the
Dinosaur in 1914.
Collectors are noticing where our history came
from in comics and are realizing how important it is for us to be historians for
the future generations. The recent sale of Dream of the Rarebit Fiend and
Little Nemo in Slumberland only illustrates how significant our past is
and how those before us helped pave the way for the comics of today.
