Mecca Comics Changes Name, Direction
“The company focus has changed form the standard, 32-page superhero comic to an eclectic series of graphic novels featuring a combination of new material as well as some classic material represented by some of the industry's true statesmen,” publisher John May said in a press release. Among the company's first projects under their new name will be the completion of artist Dick Ayers' three-part, illustrated autobiography, which has already received sterling reviews. Rich Buckler's How To Be A Dynamic Comic Book Artist and the collection of Jack Katz's pioneering creator-owned series The First Kingdom are also on the schedule. May also announced that Charles S. Novinskie has been named as president of Century Comics. Novinskie served as sales and promotions manager for Topps Comics in the 1990s and currently serves as a board member for A Commitment To Our Roots (ACTOR), the non-profit organization that helps comic creators during their time of need. “Being involved with Century Comics is a great opportunity for me,” Novinskie said. “We will continue to grow slowly so that we can ensure being around years from now, still publishing books that everyone can enjoy.” Novinskie said that the company is evaluating properties from several creators ranging from new projects to reprints.
