ORIGIN ISSUE: John Haines
|
Recently we introduced a new regular feature in Scoop: Origin Issue. The subject is a straightforward question, but one with many different answers: Why do you collect?
The subject this time is retailer and convention dealer John Haines.
So what is it about collecting comics that is so appealing?
For me, it’s the thrill of the hunt and the joy of discovery. When I talk with other long-time collectors, we all seem to agree that finding an illusive issue is actually more satisfying than the ownership of it.
We also seem to share an enjoyment of the archaeological component of the hobby. I especially like making a new discovery while reading an old comic for the first time – my first epiphany happened while reading Captain America #16 and realizing that the Red Skull knew way back in 1942 that Steve Rogers was Cap’s secret identity, a fact that was remarkable to me since this fact was ignored during the entire Silver Age.
Beyond that appeal, collecting also indulges pure nostalgia. In fact, I can remember minute details from the first comic I ever read and the situation it occurred in. My first exposure to a comic book was an old copy of Incredible Hulk #3 at the barber shop. I can remember the excitement of wondering what was going to happen to Rick Jones if that monster ever got through that stone door. I can remember the smells and sounds of the shop, and I can remember the exact feel of the comic in my hands. That’s why I keep on collecting year after year.
Overstreet Advisor John Haines has been a longtime comic book dealer at conventions. He recently opened a retail outlet, Comics & Friends, in Mentor, Ohio.
If you’d like to share your origin issue, drop us a line with “Origin Issue” in the subject line. We’re looking for a maximum of 200 words addressing why you collect (and it doesn’t have to be comic books).
