In Memoriam: Penny Singleton
.html
We regret to report that prolific actress Penny Singleton, best known for
her film portrayal of Blondie, passed away Wednesday, November 12. She was
95.
The Blondie series, which had 28 films from 1938 to 1950, was based
on the Chic Young cartoon strip about the misadventures of a small town family
created in 1930. Arthur Lake played Blondie's husband, Dagwood Bumstead.
No one else ever played Blondie and Dagwood on the big screen. Two later
Blondie TV series were short-lived.
After ending her time as Blondie, Singleton (whose real name was Dorothy
McNulty) went on to voice Jane Jetson in the popular Hanna-Barbera animated
series, The Jetsons.
She was also an active member of the American Guild of Variety Artists, a
performer's labor union. As union vice president in the 1960s, she led a Radio
City Music Hall Rockettes strike.
Singleton is survived by two daughters, two grandchildren and a
great-grandson.
