How Comics and Friends Celebrated FCBD

When Mentor, Ohio-based comic book retailer John Haines and the crew at Comics and Friends opened their store in the Great Lakes Mall, it was in the (thus far, we hope) darkest days of the recession. We absolutely admired the “can do” attitude that their determination to make a go of it when the temptation for many of us was to crawl under the covers and say “Wake me when it’s over.”
And they haven’t been content to merely open a great new retail location. Along with launching the new one-day show known as the Lake Effect Comic Book Convention (which got Page 1 coverage in the local paper), Comics and Friends staged a great presentation for the May 1, 2010 Free Comic Book Day.
What’s really great to report is that their home base, Great Lakes Mall, really got behind the event and promoted it on their outside signage two weeks ahead of time. Gemstone Publishing supplied 500 extra copies of The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics and Comics and Friends employees and volunteers passed them out all over the mall to curious patrons as part of the promotional effort.
They had many fans stop by, some in costume, and even had one young man come in on the way to his prom. That’s a dedicated fan, something we expect our John and the folks at Comics and Friends are going to have many more of in the years to come.
