Sotheby's

Who knows what evil lurks...

.html We recently spoke with Jerry Weist of Sotheby's, and he had some exciting news about a new collection that will feature the one and only Shadow! This collection is from the estate of Charles Coll, who was a popular illustrator for the original golden age comic title, as well as several of the late 1940s Shadow Pulp covers. He was the cousin to Joseph Clement Coll, the famous and renowned magazine illustrator - and three finished, inked original pieces of his will also be included in this auction, along with one original pencil (from King of the Kyber Rifles), and two large inked sketch pages with figures.

This collection will also include a good selection of Doc Savage and The Shadow Pulp magazines, and will feature other Pulp artwork from the collection of Forrest J Ackerman. There will also be a near complete Marvel Comics collection with The Amazing Spider-Man 1-100, Amazing Fantasy #15, Hulk 1-6, Avengers 1-100, The X-Men 1-100, and a selection of original silver age artwork. Additional consignments will come from the estates of Gray Morrow (with more great comic artwork) and Tom Sutton - continuing selections from these two important comic artists private collections.

Some highlights include:

1.) Charles Coll - The Shadow original cover painting for June 1, 1946, gouache on illustration board, 19 x 14 1/2", in excellent condition - auction estimate $3,000/to $5,000

2.) Charles Coll -The Shadow Annual, 1947 Edition, original cover painting for this important issue, gouache on illustration board, 24 x 17", excellent condition, framed - auction estimate of $5,000 / to $7,000
