It was standing room only in Louisville, KY on November 9 when Hunt
Auctions conducted an auction for the Louisville Slugger Museum. When it was
over, the total realized was $1.6 million. The auction was the highlight of a
week's worth of events that were designed to raise acquisition money for the
museum. (Some of the money will come from third party consignments).
The one item that seemed to be on everyone's minds was game-used bats. In
addition to the Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron's 740th home run bat sold for
$34,100 and a Lefty Grove bat dating to the 1931 World Series realized
$55,000.
It wasn't just the heroes of the past who realized
terrific sales, modern day sluggers held their own. A bat used by Mickey Mantle
sold for $20,900 and Baltimore's own Cal Ripken saw one of his bats go for
$4,950.
While baseball bats commanded much of the attention, game
used gloves, signed baseballs and other baseball related artifacts saw good
sales. For complete results visit www.huntauctions.com. All
