Golden 1954 Oldsmobile Concept Car Sells for $3.24 Million
The stand-out car of the auction was a 1954 Oldsmobile concept car. The official name of the car is The Oldsmobile F-88. It was their answer to the Chevrolet Corvette. The car was displayed during General Motors Motorama shows. At the time, it was considered a dream car. While the car is truly impressive looking, it's what is under the hood that set it apart. It has a 324 cubic-inch Oldsmobile Rocket V-8 engine producing a maximum 250 horsepower. This sale was the highest price ever paid at the annual event. Barrett-Jason was formed when, in 1960, Tom Barrett was trying to sell a 1933 Cadillac V-16 town Car. Russ Jackson was interested, but the sale never happened. However, they did become friends and over the years traded information and became close friends. The two first worked together on a car show in 1967. In 1971, they worked together on their first classic car auction. Every year saw a growth in auction activity. Barrett brought the very best and rarest automobiles to the event, while Jackson expertly collected and restored cars for show. As time went on, the auction grew and Jackson brought several family members in to work on the auction. While both men have since passed away, the auction house they started has become one of the leading car auctioneers in the world. This weekend's $500 auction promises to be a portent of good things to come. For complete details on the company, please visit them at www.barrett-jackson.com. |
