Batman #11 Art Sells for $195,500

The original cover art for Batman #11, by Fred Ray and Jerry Robinson, sold for $195,500.00. 

Original comic art was white hot during the recent Heritage Signature Auction. For many, the highlight was the original cover art for Batman #11 which sold for $195,500. The art, by Fred Ray and Jerry Robinson is a fantastic example of the best of the Golden Age. The sale is also a great example of how incredibly strong the market for original art is.

As fantastic as that sale was, there were several other sales of original art, both in comic books and comic strips that caught the eye of collectors. Two separate covers for Action Comics attracted a lot of attention. Action #45 featured the art of Fred Ray and it sold for $51,750.00. The second, for Action #51 also by Fred Ray, also sold for $51,750.00.

Modern art also gathered a lot of bidders. John Romita Sr. and Mike Esposito's cover art for The Amazing Spider-Man #41 brought $58,650.00. The cover art to The Uncanny X-Men #114 by John Byrne and Terry Austin brought $43,125.00. Gene Colan and Frank Giacoia's work on the cover to Daredevil #27 realized $21, 275.00. Neal Adams cover to Strange Adventures #211, which features Deadman, sold for $16,100.00. There were many other incredible lots listed.

It wasn't just comic cover art that got everyone excited. There were a lot of listings for original comic strip art. Both dailies and Sunday pieces brought out interested collectors. Heritage also saw strong reaction to several animation sheets from the Disney Studios.

A splash page from Superman Peace on Earth by Alex Ross realized $10,350.00.
 
Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant Sunday page, dated 11-05-39, realized $18,400.00.

This Dick Tracy Sunday strip by Chester Gould brought 01-09-38 $3,450.00.
 
A Krazy Kat Sunday by George Herriman dated to 1917 brought $11,500.00.
 
A 16 page story by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta from Thor #134 sold for $46,000.00.

A painting by John Stanley of Little Lulu and Tubby done in 1979 realized $5,400.00.
 
Jim Steranko and Jim Tartaglione created this splash page for X-Men 351. It sold for $17,250.00.
 
Gene Colan and Frank Giacoia created the art for the cover of Daredevil #21. It realized $21,275.00.
