Strong Postcard Prices at Just Kids Nostalgia

This postcard from the California Mid-Winter Expo sold for $1,355.00.It was one of four .

Ken Farrell, owner of Just Kids Nostalgia in Huntington, New York, reports that their latest auction of rare and unusual postcards saw strong prices across the board. He told Scoop:“Not only were high prices realized for all sections, but fully 98% of the lots sold. That's an incredible number for any auction,”.

In perfect synch with this holiday time of year, the largest section of the sale was Santa Claus card. Over 400 lots of the jolly old elf were offered. High quality and striking images were the norm for this group. The highlights included Santa dressed as Uncle Sam ($1335), Santa on a motorcycle ($166), a playing card Santa ($140), a Samuel Schmucker Santa ($125), a Santa rotating disc mechanical ($459), a nice group of pull-tab Santa mechanicals ( $185 to $230 each) and a small, but choice group of about dozen Santa hold-to-lights ($126 to $875 each).

Non Christmas Holiday cards included rare issues by Henderson for Groundhog Day ($207 to $411 each), a Clapsaddle mechanical for Halloween ($230) and two different New Year's cards with designs by Samuel Schmucker ($94 and $102).

World's Fair and Exposition cards were a strong section of this sale, starting with the very first illustrated US card for Chicago's 1873 Inter-State Industrial Exposition ($2542). Cards for the 1893 Columbian Expo by an anonymous publisher ($1607 for the set of 5) and those by Schachner ($120 to $287 each) saw spirited bidding. Two different sets of California Mid-Winter cards ($1120 and $1355) and a scarce set of Tuck cards for Mardi Gras ($605) were just a few of the standouts in this section.

Just Kids Nostalgia has an incredible ability to realize strong prices in any collectible field. A full-color catalog, in which the material was meticulously broken down into individual lots, and extensive print and web promotion helped achieve record prices for the consignor. “We are able to break collections down into many individual lots,” said Farrell. “We think that this is a tremendous advantage to the consignor and to our buyers. Collectors are able to buy just the items they really want and are willing to pay more for that advantage. It's a win-win situation for everyone.” Just Kids Nostalgia can be found at www.justkidsnostalgia.com.
