Collectibles Celebration: Hake’s Closes Strong

Hake's Americana closed the first day of their Summer Auction with strong sales across the board. Political memorabilia, always a strong area in every Hake's Auction, once again proved it's strength in the collector's marketplace. Pinbacks were hot, but it was this item from 1844 featuring Henry Clay that may be the most interesting sale of the day. As exciting as the $4,406.86 received for the bandana was, it was by no means the only highlight.

Advertising items found success with listings from Buster Brown, Pez, Esquire Magazine and Hires Root Beer capturing the eye of knowledgeable hobbyists. One item stands out among the advertising icons listed. A Paramount Foods Pickle Man Award Figure found a couple of collectors going head to head at the last minute. The 8.5" molded hard rubber from c. 1930 figure sold for $462. Judging from the smile on the Pickle Man himself, everyone was a winner.

The General Manager of Hake's Americana, Alex Winter, felt that this sale proved another point about collectibles. " This is a great example of how a relatively unknown character can attract attention. This is why we try to list as much variety in our events as we can. You never know what you are going to find in a Hake's Auction."

Another item was attracting attention from hobbyists. "We listed a lot of five Native American Cabinet photos from the 1890's-1900 and they really brought out some solid bidding. Their featured a Chief and a Medicine Man as well as a shot of the whole council." said Winter. "It was an amazing lot with some unusual history and we were proud to be able to list it." The lot brought $1,558.48.

The second part of Hakes's Americana & Collectibles auction #189 closed with great results in many categories. Comic characters, gum cards, toys, watches, premiums and more brought in record prices. A Dr. Frankenstein Marx prototype battery toy sold for $5,019.

Comic book highlights included a Weird Science #14 Gaines file copy which was CGC graded 9.6 selling for $6,160 and a Superman #8 Recil Macon copy CGC graded 9.0 selling for $4,844.

Comic related lots were also poular A choice condition Yellow Kid gum card set ended at $3,011. A Jiminy Cricket figurine by Brayton Laguna sold for $2,423. Timepiece sales included a Buck Rogers boxed pocket watch at $2,800, Jiminy Cricket boxed birthday series watch at $1,800 and the classic Mickey Mouse 1933 Ingersoll pocket watch, boxed with fob, at $1,680. A unique banjo with comic art brought $3,279.58.

Also of note are: Betty Boop string holder $1,910, a group of 10 Horrors of War rare over-print cards $2,236, Smith-Miller P.I.E. boxed tractor trailer $2,144 and Beatles boxed bobbing head set $1,761.
