Heritage Comic Auction Brings $1.2 Million

Heritage Auction Galleries' recent signature comic book and original art auction came to a close last week with results realizing over $1.2 million for the 1,147 lots offered. Although after auction sales are still taking place, auction totals came in at $1,234,883.00.

“This was a solid start to what looks to be a solid year,” said Ed Jaster, Vice-President for Heritage, in a recent press release. “Superman and original art were the stars of this auction, but we saw great strength in a number of areas, including the ever-strong high-grade Silver Age category. I was particularly gratified by the strong performance of the Steve Ditko Amazing Spider-Man page, which pictured a pulse-pounding battle between Ol' Webhead and the scurrilous Scorpion, and which may represent a new high-water mark for these desirable pages.”

Highlights from the auction include: an original painting for a Heavy Metal poster by Chris Achilleos, which sold for $21,510; the original painting for the paperback cover to Dragonsbane, by Michael Whelan, brought $19,120; Boris Vallejo's Eagle original art went for $17,925; the original art for the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #155, by John Romita, Sr. sold for $15,535; and a Jeff Jones original Conan painting went for $14,340.
