Carl Barks Oil Painting Brings $119,500
Friday, March 07, 2008
Carl Barks painting The Goose Egg Nugget recently sold for $119,500. The painting, created circa 1973, is based on Barks’ own story from Four Color Comics #456, back to the Klondike. According to comments made by Barks in The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck by Carl Barks, the painting was among his personal favorites. He cited the amount of detail he was able to weave into the picture as well as the fact that it told it’s own story as just two of the reasons he valued it so much. The painting was just one of many Barks-related highlights in Heritage’s February Vintage Comic and Comic Art Signature Auction. The event, which was held on February 28 and 29, 2008 in Dallas, Texas, saw several works by Barks attract the attention of collectors around the globe. The results are proof once again that the work of Carl Barks is among the most valued in the collecting hobby. The continuing growth in value for the series of Carl Barks Lithographs created for Another Rainbow Lithographs was also proved by sales of Sailing the Spanish Main #198/245 for $2,987.50 and Rich Finds at Inventory Time #93/500 for $1,135.25. It wasn’t just Barks’ art that was hot. Original issues of Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories that featured his work were popular across the board. WDC&S #71 CGC 8.5 (with the added bonus of a Walt Kelly cover) went for $956. WDC&S #64 CGC 9.2, with a fine Christmas cover by Walt Kelly as well as a Pinocchio story realized $3,883.75. WDC&S #47 CGC 9.4 with a classic Dopey cover by Kelly, brought $6,572.50.
