Cinemasterpieces, an eBay seller specializing in vintage movie posters, sold an original movie poster insert from The Wizard of Oz late in February. Inserts promoting movies were usually printed in fewer numbers than one-sheet posters, making them very rare and quite desirable. Studios stopped issuing the inserts in the early 1980s, making them even rarer.
This poster, made in 1939, was set with a Buy It Now price of $35,995, but sold for a slightly lower price of $25,995…still an impressive sum. The genuine insert, issued by the studio when the film was released, measures 14 X 36” and is paper backed and in excellent C8 condition. The insert came with a free certificate of authenticity.
The novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written by L. Frank Baum and was illustrated by W.W. Denslow, published in 1900 by George M. Hill Company in Chicago. The title was shortened to The Wizard of Oz when it became a stage production in 1902. The film adaptation, released in 1939, was directed by Victor Fleming, adapted from Baum’s novel by Noel Langley and Florence Ryerson. It starred Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, with Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley as the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man, respectively.
