What would life be without that glorious, delectable treat known as Mister
Softee? All around America and abroad, that same familiar (if a tad eerie)
jingle beckons young and old alike to lose themselves in a delicious cone. In
fact, Mister Softee is the largest franchised soft ice cream operation to date.
But did you know that Mister Softee has been delighting fans since 1956? That's
the year that brothers Bill and James Conway founded Mister Softee Inc., and
legend has it that on St. Patrick's Day of that year the two took their frozen
confection to the streets of West Philadelphia - selling green colored ice cream
out of the now-famous truck.
By 1958, Mister Softee had already reached
great popularity - in fact, the brothers had to move their company to a bigger
facility in Runnemede, NJ just to accommodate its growth. By the time Mister
Softee entered the '60s, the smiling cone-face beneath that swirling coif of
vanilla ice cream was popping up everywhere - from toy trucks to toy rings. In
fact, there was even a Mister Softee Club!
Though his popularity
started to fade in the '80s, today Mr. Softee is back on the scene. You can see
his familiar truck on the streets of cities from London to New York, and you can
surround yourself with a whole new assortment of Softee collectibles. Yo-yos,
beach towels, frisbees, coffee cups...it seems Mister Softee is here to stay.
One of our favorites from this new generation of toys is this Wacky Wobbler from
Funko. It's a very dapper Mister Softee, with that terrific ice cream head
wobbling atop a very sharp black tuxedo.
So it isn't hard to see why we
have a soft spot for old Softee.
