Lovable Little Lotta... and thirsty Little Dot, Little Lotta #21

This week, get ready to have a whole lotta fun with Harvey Comics' Little Lotta, a lovably large little gal who got her start in 1953 as a back up feature to her best friend Little Dot (this was actually the same comic that introduced Richie Rich). With a shock of blonde hair and a giant bow, freckles galore, wide eyes and an even wider mouth, Lotta soon got her own comic book series in 1955, where she stayed in the limelight until 1976 (save for a year hiatus in '73) and even had a comeback in the early '90s.

Lotta's chubbiness was the direct result of her excessive eating, which was always a main feature of her stories. But her excessive eating also gave her excessive strength, and she actually did a lot of good saving those in need and solving problems in a jiffy. This made her a sort of heroine in the eyes of her peers. She was a far cry from the stereotypical fat-kid-in-the-schoolyard who is normally the recipient of cruel taunts and torments... in fact, Lotta even had a boyfriend - a shy, bespectacled little guy named Gerald - with whom she had a slew of save-the-day adventures dressed as Leaping Lotta.

The mid-'60s saw a spin-off comic for Little Lotta - Little Lotta in Foodland - a title that lasted for nearly six years. Even after the end of her own title in the '70s, Little Lotta appeared as a back-up feature in other Harvey Comics through the early '80s before coming back in 1992-93.

A lotta Little Lotta comics can be found today, many for very reasonable prices. And if history is any indication, we think we're due for another large-scale Little Lotta comeback!
