Magica De Spell

It's been two years since we last visited the maven of Disney duck
mischief, Magica De Spell. Last profiled in 2003, we thought we'd bring back the
top five trivia bits about this dastardly, duckish vixen:
1. Carl Barks drew inspiration for the world's richest duck's
archvillainess from a tight-knit bevy of brunette beauties: Sophia Loren,
Maleficent (of Sleeping Beauty fame) and Morticia, the Addams family
matriarch.
2. Despite her misleading moniker, Magica DeSpell didn't initially possess
magical powers. In his article "Why does Magica DeSpell want Scrooge's Dime?,"
artist Don Rosa asserts that the dastardly duckling has been portrayed as "a
normal person who uses her knowledge of ancient languages and alchemy to utilize
magical 'tools' she discovers or... buys." Among these tools is a zap ray,
powered by batteries, she conceals beneath a sleeve.
3. The evil duck enchantress owns not one, but two lairs. One is a villa on
the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius, the other a more quaint cottage located in central
Ducksburg (as is evidenced in the story, "Isle of Golden Geese").
4. While in comics Magica's pet raven is called Ratface, her raven in the
animated series, Ducktales, is actually a transformed manifestation of
her brother Poe DeSpell.
5. Magica was once the proud and legitimate owner of Scrooge McDuck's first
dime, and though it never yielded her the wealth she assumed it would during its
brief time in her possession, she continued to doggedly pursue it long after
Scrooge got it back.
