Bizarre New World: Population Explosion
Friday, April 25, 2008

Ape Entertainment; $6.95

In the March 14, 2008 Scoop, we told you about the preview we'd read of Bizarre New World: Population Explosion, the one-shot sequel to Ape Entertainment's 2007 three issue mini-series Bizarre New World. Now the finished product is actually out. Maybe it's just the difference between reading it on the screen and actually holding it in our hands, what what we liked before we love now and what we loved before we LOVE now. This is a fun comic.

In the first mini-series, Paul Krutcher inexplicably becomes the first person who can fly under his own power. As he tries to figure out how to use his new found powers, he hides them from everyone. Then just a few weeks later, with his abilities still a secret, just about everyone else in the world can suddenly fly as well, and someone else has grabbed the limelight for being first.

Paul has other problems, too. He's a long distance, non-custodial dad, and his confidence isn't exactly great to start with. How does he deal with things? That's the story, and writer Skipper Martin, artist Christopher Provencher and colorist Wed Dzioba do a great job at communicating both the human element and the real world considerations suddenly gaining the ability to fly would entail. It's like an upbeat version of Heroes meeting an indy film. Check it out.
