Creators Thomas Hall and Daniel Bradford are set to debut their new comic, Robot-13. at the Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art Festival, June 6-7, 2009, and it looks at this point as if there is another fun addition to the comics (and sensibilities) inspired by writer-artist Mike Mignola and his most famous creator, Hellboy.
This is not to suggest that Hall and Bradford are in any way aping Mignola (they are not), but the similar juxtaposed senses of wonder, horror and humor as well as the visual muse are clearly resident here.
What keeps this from devolving into negative territory is the strong story. The title character has no idea what or who it is or where it came from. All it knows is that it has an instinctual and irresistible drive to protect mankind from mythological creatures of destruction, and this first issue gives him ample opportunity to do so.
The creators have sited the influence of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and it it’s loud and clear in a very positive way. They’ve made it their own, and the story works. We'll be looking forward to seeing what Hall and Bradford do with their creation.
